Tokyo Science Learning Trip 2018

In order to provide diversified learning experiences for our students and raise their interest in science learning, our Integrated Science Department organized the captioned learning trip for our junior formers and senior members of School Robotics Team.

Successfully carried out from 19th to 23rd January 2018, the Tokyo Science Learning Trip did deepen our understanding about how innovation, science, technology and engineering contribute to the betterment of human’s life and future.

During the trip, not only did we, 31 junior high flyers, 4 senior members of Robotics Team and 3 science teachers, visit a number of world-class *science museums where a lot of inspirations were gained from eye-opening exhibits of innovation and state-of-the-art technology, but also interacted with representatives of different leading companies in the science and technology industries such as SONY Entertainment, Nissan Motor and Toyota Motor. We had guided tours in their *manufacturing plants and departments of research and development.

On top of the above, our students attended a very practical lesson at Tokyo Disaster Museum where they learnt essential life-saving skills in response to natural disasters and emergency such as earthquake, tsunami and fire, which are not covered in current Science education of Hong Kong.

All in all, the learning trip not only provided our students with unforgettable and valuable science-learning experience, but also widened our science teachers’ horizons. Hopefully this sort of learning trip could engage more students and teachers in the years to come. Most importantly, heartfelt thanks and appreciation must be conveyed to parents and school administrators for their support as well as to all participants for their devotion and active learning attitude.

* National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation – where students had a chance to have hands-on contact with exhibits with cutting-edge science and technology so that they could experience the technological progress of today, from simple day-to-day questions, to the latest technologies, the global environment, space exploration and life science.

* National Museum of Nature and Science – where students learnt from a vast collection of exhibits about how to protect our home planet based on the harmonious balance of the Earth’s ecosystem and intelligent thoughts of human beings.

* Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum – where students were amazed by an actual rocket engine used for firing test and a large-scale model of Shinkai 6500 (manned submergence research vessel). They also experienced designing a jet aircraft, helicopter and deep submergence vehicle as well as operating a helicopter.

* Museum of Aeronautical Sciences – where students not only learnt how Narita Airport is operated, but also saw full scale replicas of historic planes and components of modern planes such as the landing gear and engine of a Boeing 747. Some students even tried piloting a plane simulator.

* Tokyo Disaster Museum – wherestudents attended a number of practical and interactive lessons about how to cope with natural disasters and emergency such as earthquake, tsunami and fire. All students were scared and intimidated by the tremendous shaking of the earthquake simulator of Great East Japan Earthquake (magnitude 9.0).

* Toyota Mega Web – where students were impressed by the interactive exhibits about the innovation and technology developed by Toyota Motor on enhancing vehicles’ fuel economy and road safety. The company representatives also explained patiently to our students on how GPS auto-pilot system and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle work.
* Nissan Motor Yokohama Plant -- where students had a guided tour in the Nissan engine production line and saw how industrial machines and robots are deployed to massively assist different assembly lines in automobile manufacturing.

* Sony Explora Science – where students interacted with game-based exhibits and explored how light and sound is linked to entertainment. 

* NHK Studio Park – where students gained hands-on experience in making a TV programme in the broadcast studio and a computer animation in creative lab with the latest imaging technology.
