Guidance Week
June 12, 2007

Respect is one of the most essential elements in interpersonal relationships and it is one of the traditional virtues that the Chinese treasures. In the school setting, respect plays an important role in regulating the relationship between teachers and students. It is also essential for students themselves to live in respect and harmony. In regard of the vitality of respect, the school’s guidance team has organized a guidance week theming respect in late April. The main aim of the guidance week is to enhance students’ awareness of respect and encourage their practice of it in their daily lives. Through the activities, we hope students can gain a better understanding of the importance of respect and integrate it into their social world.

Game Booths
Games were included in the guidance week to create an exciting and relaxing environment for learning. Six game booths, centering around five different themes, namely responsibility, effective communication, self-control, politeness, empathy and tolerance, were set up by guidance ambassadors. Upon finishing the tasks required by the game booths, participants were guided to reflect upon the underlying messages of the tasks. Through peer guidance, students were able to grasp a better understanding of the different elements of respect.

Co-curricular Activities
The guidance week was not only an effort by the guidance team. Different subject departments were involved and it was designed in a way to facilitate penetration of guidance elements into the school curriculum. For both Chinese and English Language, across the junior and senior forms, topics relating to respect such as ‘The person I respect the most’, ‘Respect is the most important element in a relationship’ were given to students and lots of essays and outstanding work were gathered. Collaboration with the English Department yielded a hilarious story-telling session at the school campus and co-organizing the lunch-time forum with the Civic Education Department provided a thought-provoking debate session for students.

Banner Making Activity
One of the highlights of the guidance week was the collective banner-making activity. Under the instruction of the Arts teacher, heart-shaped cards of various sizes were made by over 500 students during Arts lesson and were pasted onto a large banner in the school-wide function. Heart-warming messages to our schoolmates were written on these posted cards outlining the design of the banner and forming a beautiful banner poster.

Song Dedication
Along with the banner-making activity was the song dedication session. Encouraging messages with meaningful songs have cultivated a strong atmosphere of support and caring among schoolmates and the whole activity ended up with dozens of inspiring and motivating messages.

Words of Appreciation
The guidance week was wrapped up by reading a massive amount of written messages between teachers and students during the morning assembly. Through these written messages, teachers showed their appreciation and support to students in their daily effort whereas students showed their gratitude towards their teachers upon their guidance and teaching. The message reading session was an invaluable opportunity for both teachers and students to share words from their heart, which is often difficult during daily school routine.

Conclusion
It is the second academic year that our school organized the guidance week. Last year, we focused on self-esteem falling into the category of intrapersonal issues. This year, we go one step further and try to explore interpersonal elements in guidance and counseling. We particularly picked up ‘respect’ as our main theme as we consider it as the foundation element for interpersonal success. We deliberately created seven components which we found essential and tried to reinforce students’ awareness of these components through the guidance week. Through intensive activities tailored-made to our students, we tried to direct students along with concepts like responsibility, effective communication, self-control, politeness, empathy, care and tolerance. While understanding the value of respect and putting it into practice may be a life-long learning for our students, we believe the seeds were sown somewhere in their hearts, waiting for the moment to blossom.

P.S. Special thanks should be given to the Arts Department, the Civic Education Department, the Chinese and the English Department, for their generous support and guidance upon all activities held in the guidance week.

Teachers’ sharing 老師分享

Mr. Cheung Chor Kiu

Nowadays in the commercial world, more importance is put into raising people’s personal abilities and competitiveness while the importance of traditional virtues is being downplayed. As a guidance teacher, I strongly believe that a person’s inner qualities are essential in helping a person to survive and excel in the society, no matter whether we measure success in terms of one’s career or interpersonal engagements. It is with this idea in mind that I personally find the guidance week with the theme of respect a meaningful and rewarding experience.

The guidance week was set up to raise students’ awareness of the importance of respect. Throughout the activities in the whole week, we tried to establish a culture of respect in the school campus. We strongly believe that respect is an attitude that we all should treasure and it is the building block of interpersonal relationships.

Cultivating a personal habit or attitude, however, is never an easy task. It would take a lifetime for students to learn to respect others, and it would be too good to say that we have seen effects in one week’s time. Nonetheless, we are certain that those efforts we made would constantly shape our students’ values, and that one day students would come to understand what we are preaching every now and then.

Miss Leung Kar Man

I have in mind the saying, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." As children we are taught to respect our parents, teachers, and elders, school rules and laws, family and cultural traditions, other people's feelings and rights and people's differing opinions. It is widely acknowledged that respect is one of the essential elements in one’s personal and social development. It is not a high sounding philosophy but common virtue that we always price. In regard of its vitality, we have developed a variety of activities to raise students’ awareness of the importance of respect.
We understand that respect is an attitude which cannot be cultivated in one week’s time. Nonetheless, we believe we have made a prominent step forward to success; success in the sense that both students and teachers were provided with ample chances to reflect on their understanding of the concept through different thought-provoking activities; success in the sense that guidance ambassadors have demonstrated their creativity in setting up game booths to help our schoolmates to grasp a better understanding of the concept; success in the sense that we, the organizers, find the guidance week a rewarding experience! Seemingly, every one’s participation was essential to the success of this program. We failed, we overcame. I look forward the spirit of Guidance Week could be carried on!

Social workers’ sharing 社工分享

Miss Cheung Ka Ki, Tina

This was the second Guidance Week in our school and we had recruited a team of Guidance Ambassadors in the current year as helpers. The Guidance week provides a valuable opportunity for them to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for their contribution to the game booths. It was obvious that the game booths were able to enhance our schoolmates’ awareness of the theme “Respect” throughout the interaction. The efforts that the Guidance Ambassadors had made were valuable, and the game booths were attractive to our schoolmates as a result. I believed that it was a valuable learning process for our students to enhance their critical thinking skills as well as creativity. Besides, students were able to explore and learn about various social skills in the planning and implementation process, the same for the colleagues among ourselves with the teachers. You did a good job, Guidance Ambassadors! Thanks a lot for your help!

Miss Yeung Ka Man, Caren

What is respect? Through the Guidance Week, Ngan Po Ling College family members had a more in-depth understanding and reflection on the related theme.

In such a materialistic society, being respectful and altruistic are important virtues. Thus, as a member of Guidance Team, our mission is to raise the awareness of ‘Respect’ and encourage our students to conduct it in daily lives through a series of activities.

Organizing a school wide program is never an easy task. It is lucky to have the assistance of all guidance ambassadors. During the preparation and implementation, they were engaged in robust debates. I am sure that their communication skills, problem solving skills and organization skills have been strengthened. Besides, I am glad to see that they become more confident in presenting themselves. Guidance Ambassadors, we appreciate your efforts and we are proud of what you did!

Last but not least, it is a fact that an attitude could not be nurtured in one week’s time. Yet, we would like to spread the message that we need some respectful, caring and devoted students who are willing to be polite, acceptance and considerate. I believe that we could yield positive results one day.

In conclusion, we, teachers and students, all treasure this meaningful and rewarding experience.

Guidance week was a week where I had the most fun of all in my school year until now. We had a lot of fun. I think many people liked the game booths which were not only fun but also educational. Like our topic was “Effective Communication” in which students learnt how to communicate with each other without saying a word, only by actions. Those days were so tiring but still we were happy to know that everyone was enjoying the games and the arrangement.

At the end of the week, we’ve learned how to co-operate with each other, we’ve also talked to each other more frequently and now we have a good understanding.

At last I would like to thank all the teachers from bottom of my heart for helping us, encouraging us, and respecting US.

Playing a part in the guidance week was really an enjoyable experience. I had an amazing time working with all my group members. We got more time to spend with each other and to know each other more closely by working on the Guidance Week game booths. We went through ups and downs together as well. During the preparations of the Guidance Week I learnt a lot of things which will definitely come in use in my future such as the communication strategies, leadership skills and I even gained more confidence. I will treasure this experience for a lifetime and I hope to be a Guidance Ambassador again in future.

It is my second year to take part in the Guidance Week. At the beginning, I thought that it will be the same as last year and nothing would seem special to me. Nonetheless, it was a brand new experience.
There are two things that I can remember most. First, during one meeting, all the members were told to make a game booth in groups. When I heard that, my first response was an “Oh my goodness”. The reason is that I had never made a game booth before. It is quite difficult to make an exciting, and at the same time meaningful game.

Second, the most surprising thing for me is that Miss Leung invited me to design the banner. It was quite stressful as it was a super-sized one and the completed design would be hung in the school campus. I took a lot of effort to create the design. Luckily, I think I have done a great job.

In my opinion, the Guidance Week was a great success. We team members cooperated with each other and developed great friendships. I hope to have another Guidance Week in the future.
