The Presence of Devoted Experts, the Excellence of Aerospace Technology in China
December 5, 2005

The great success of Shenzhou 6, the return of the 2 astronauts and their arrival to Hong Kong rolled up a wave of curiosity about the aerospace advancement of our country. However, to launch a spaceship successfully was definitely not only the result of the contribution of the astronauts, but also the scientists who worked whole-heartedly behind the curtain. Their effort played a crucial role in this achievement.

In order to spread the popularity of science education, we were honoured to have a seminar with the topic 'The Development of Aerospace Technology in China' with Mr. Long Le Hao and Professor Wu Dian Lian as our honourable guest speakers on 5th December, 2005. Mr. Long Le Hao, who participates actively in strategic missile and manned rocket construction in China, is an academician of the Institute of Engineering in China. The other guest speaker, Professor Wu Dian Lian, who contributes a lot to the success of Shenzhou 5 manned spacecraft and Tan Yue 1 satellite, is an expert in aerospace technology as well.

On that day, our school hall was filled with principals as well as teachers and student representatives from other schools under Po Leung Kuk. The topic Mr. Long presented was 'The Advancement of Manned Rocket Technology in China'. He showed us what the latest long-distance rocket models are and how rockets are launched. With his insightful presentation, we began to grasp the basics of aerospace technology in China. 'The Pride of the People's Republic of China' was the topic of Professor Wu's presentation. He started from the construction of self-made satellite, with ample and detailed information and statistics provided. After that, he continued his presentation by illustrating the principle of satellite operation and the difficulty of exploring the Universe. We were all attracted by their charisma.

The last part of the seminar was a question and answer session. The students were so eager to ask questions. When facing students' enquiry, both of the experts were patient to clarify their points and resolve our doubts. During this session, Mr. Long urged us to learn Putonghua, the official language of our country, as it is a tool to communicate with all people in China. Professor Wu, on the other hand, encouraged us to devote ourselves to the development of aerospace technology when we grow up by sharing with us his valuable experience.

The seminar came to an end in thunderous applause. As what Jackie Wong, a student from F. 3A, mentioned in her vote of thanks, 'We should learn from their perseverance and selfless dedication towards the development of aerospace technology in China.'

We sincerely hope that the scientists of Shenzhou 7 and Shenzhou 8 can come to our school again and explore the boundless Universe with us.
